The Icelandic men’s national football team were in action again last night, this time against Turkey. The match, played in Reykjavík through heavy rain, saw most of its action in the first half, including an own goal from Turkey just before half time.
In the first half, Turkey’s defence started to fall apart as the clock wound past the 40 minute mark. The first goal of the match was an own goal from Turkey. Elmar Bjarnason’s shot looked ready to fly to the right of the goal, when a quick-thinking Omer Toprak came in with a header, inadvertently netting a goal for Iceland. The second goal came just minutes later, with a header from Kári Árnason.
Turkey struggled to regain their composure in the second half. Iceland dominated possession, making a comeback all but impossible, even when the goalscorer Elmar limped off injured five minutes before the final whistle.
Following the result, Iceland reached second position in Group 1 of the World Cup qualifiers.
