It’s hard to review a kebab house (or, in this case, the Kebab House). It is not the choice for connoisseurs of haute cuisine, nor for those in search of something with low carbs, low cals or other statistics that might ease the mind (the relevant stats of Kebab Húsið probably have the opposite effect,
should you choose to examine them).
Having said that, Kebab Húsið fills a niche in the restaurant market that is both important and, at times, enjoyable. When you’ve got the munchies, when you want something fast, something filling, and something at 5am, this is where you turn.
Kebab Húsið has things going for it. It’s got the best location (if you have spent more than 24 hours in Reykjavík you will already have passed by it). It’s got the best hours (French fries always taste better at 6.30 am on a Saturday). And, for what it’s worth, the food’s not bad either.
Appropriately, Kebab Húsið’s main attractions are kebabs (from 650 ISK).
Prepared in homemade pita bread (slightly too thick, if I’m being picky), with homemade chili sauce and homemade tzatziki (very refreshing), the sliced lamb sandwiches are served with or without fries in little cardboard boxes.
There’s room to eat on the premises
– I thought the Greek music playing in the background was very atmospheric
– or you can take your meal away and stumble off into the night.
