Oh boy, a lot has gone down in the seven months since the last Iceland Airwaves festival. For starters, the festival has changed hands from its long-time managers Mr. Destiny to a joint deal between Icelandair and Iceland Music Export. Last month, concert promoter (and mayor of Dalabyggð) Grímur Atlason was announced as the festival’s new manager. The festival now seems to be on solid financial ground, and they are ready to go great guns on the next edition of Airwaves, going on October 13–17th 2010.
Last week they started getting us all hot and bothered with a juicy teaser announcement of the first confirmed acts. It has got our collective panties in a twist. Nine international outfits have been namedropped, as well as a whole whack of locals. All of the news is good.
On the electro-pop front we’ve got a shitload of Swedes, including Slagsmålsklubben, jj and The Amplifetes, who would probably make an insane concert if teamed up with Icelandic bands Sometime, Sykur and Bloodgroup. Folksters Junip and Basia Bulat could round out a sweet show with Pascal Pinon and Lights on the Highway, while weirdo-rockers Oh No Ono and Think About Life could get freaky with Retro Stefson and Reykjavík!. Finally, how magnificent would an Efterklang-Hjaltalín-Seabear triple-Axel be? Pretty effing cool.
So get your tickets now! The presale tickets are on at 11.900 ISK (70 Euro) until July 1st and after that they bump up to 14.900 ISK (90 Euro). As always, if you’re coming from abroad, look into the excellent package deals from Icelandair to get yourself set. Accommodation is a hot commodity and hotels are great places to afterparty. Just saying.
