The European Film Festival has returned to Bíó Paradís for the second year, once again bringing the very best of European film to Iceland.
This year, the cinema’s directors have hand-picked twelve films from several European film festivals, including guest of honour Agnieszka Holland’s film ‘In Darkness,’ which will be presented with an audio description for the visually impaired.
Her screening is part of a greater three-year-long project called “Iceland and Poland against the exclusion from culture”, that aims to improve access to cultural events for individuals with disabilities. “There will be a series of cultural events that we make accessible to disabled people who wouldn’t otherwise be able to attend,” said Hrönn Sveinsdóttir, managing director of Bíó Paradís. “We have seldom done this in Iceland.”
Some of the other highlighted films this year include ‘Broken Circle Breakdown’ (Belgium), ‘Shut Up And Play The Hits’ (USA), as well as Holland’s ‘Europa Europa’ and ‘Burning Bush.’ “They’re all great films that we felt deserved to come to Iceland,” Hrönn said.
The festival will take place September 19-29. It will open with three film screenings and live music by Icelandic bluegrass band Illgresi. So if you happen to be in Reykjavík, definitely go check it out at Bíó Paradís!
