After you vote tomorrow and want to fill the time before the election results are announced, why not go shopping? We know, we know — consumerism isn’t great. But it can be done right. Shop local, make smart choices, or even avoid spending money altogether by participating in an organised Christmas swap. Read on for highlights of this weekend’s Christmas-themed events, a poster market, and gigs by Gosi and Amor Vincit Omnia.

Saman Christmas Market
Saturday November 30 — Hafnarhús — 11:00-17:00 — Free entry
The season of giving (and consuming) is finally here! It’s bound to be a bit stressful, but why not support local designers and producers while ensuring your loved ones won’t need to watch a “Benedict Cumberbatch on How to React to Bad Christmas Gifts” tutorial? Saman is an annual Christmas market showcasing the best of local design and small-batch food producers. This year, hosted at Hafnarhús, you’ll have the chance to sample — or bring home — a bottle or two of wild Icelandic ale or kombucha, unique pieces of designer clothes and so much more.IZ
Christmas Bazar
Saturday November 30 — Reykjavík Maritime Museum — 11:00-17:00 — Free entry
For someone living right by the sea, I’ve only been to the Reykjavík Maritime Museum once, and it was kinda by accident. This Sunday, the museum is hosting its very own Christmas market! You can buy early Christmas gifts directly from local artisans, support the accident prevention association through purchasing refreshments and maybe even check out the museum itself (not accidentally)! Að standa á haus: Gosi and Armor Vincit Omnia
Saturday November 30 — RVK Brewing Co./Tónabíó — 20:00 — Free entry
The Að standa á haus concert series is bringing new exciting names in music, once again! Indie weird pop Gosi (we’re not quite sure what it is, but we definitely want to hear it) is coming straight from Ísafjörður. Their music is influenced by unexpected elements, from Irish folk to Afro-funk. The second part of the night features one of our favourite new musical discoveries: the pop project Amor Vincit Omnia. We’ve heard people calling their Grapewaves gig at the Lækjartorg tower the best discovery of Iceland Airwaves this year. Convinced? See you there. IZ
Circular Christmas: Swap Market
Sunday December 1 — The Nordic House — 12:00-16:00 — Free entry
You’ve probably heard stories like “Woman swaps a hairpin for a yacht.” Well, this Sunday you can test how far your swapping and selling skills will take you by bringing in unused items to the Nordic House and exchanging them with other participants. Not every piece of junk counts, though! Bring knitted clothing, Christmas decorations, books, board games, and household items in good condition to swap. Silk screen studio Brumm Brumm will be hanging around selling their prints, too! IZ
Poster Market at Bíó Paradís
Sunday December 1 — Bíó Paradís — 13:00-18:00 — Free entry
This Sunday, the local art-house cinema gem Bíó Paradís is clearing out its closet and selling old movie posters. They’ll also be debuting their brand-new merch, so if you have a movie buff in your family or friend group, you’ve probably just found the perfect gift. Personally, this sounds like my favourite day of the year, but I’ll be out of town for work (crying emoji). If anyone goes and can grab a Drive My Car poster, I’ll pay you back, feed you some Christmas cookies, and forever cherish you. P.S. Posters are in limited supply, so it’s first come, first served! FKA New Icelanders — Chrismas Market
Wednesday December 4 — Grandi Mathöll — 17:00-20:00 — Free entry
For those who think weekend markets aren’t enough, the New Icelanders Committie of the FKA (Association of Businesswomen in Iceland) is hosting one midweek. Head to Grandi Mathöll to explore and perhaps buy crafts, jewellery and art produced by women of foreign origin living in Iceland. French-born Aurora Pelier Cady, founder of Sweet Aurora, will be selling her desserts at the market — and that alone is reason enough to check it out! IZ
