In order to make downtown Reykjavík a more pleasant experience this holiday season, the city will be closing parts of the city centre to car traffic.

The City of Reykjavík announced that these closings will be instituted every weekend this month, from 13:00 on Saturdays until 8:00 on Mondays. On the 23rd and on Christmas Eve, select streets will be for pedestrians and bicycles only from 15:00.

The parts of downtown that will be closed to car traffic are Laugavegur below Barónsstígur; Skólavörðustígur below Bergstaðastræti; and the streets Bankastræti, Austurstræti, Pósthússtræti and Aðalstræti.

Closing parts of downtown to car traffic is most often associated with the summer. As holiday decorations are festooned about downtown, and shops start staying open longer, making downtown more friendly to pedestrians is hoped to encourage people to enjoy the downtown experience.
