The Icelandic Red Cross will donate over 12 million ISK to help Italian refugee rescue efforts in the Mediterranean, and are calling on the public for help.

Vísir reports that relief efforts in the Mediterranean have been greatly strained lately, as refugees from the Middle East and North Africa attempt to take to the open sea, often in dangerously unseaworthy boats, in the hopes of starting a new life in Europe. In this year alone, some 3,000 refugees have drowned at sea attempting to make the perilous journey.

In order to help assist in efforts to save these people, the Icelandic Red Cross has vowed to send 12.3 million ISK to the Italian Red Cross. An Icelandic nurse will also be joining the relief effort there next week.

The general public is also encouraged to help out. You can make donations by phone or by direct deposit. The donation amounts are organised in the following way:

1,500 ISK donation: 904 1500
2,500 ISK donation: 904 2500
5,500 ISK donation: 904 5500

If you have an Icelandic bank account, you can also directly deposit a donation, using the account number 0342-26-12, with the kennitala 530269-1649.
