The City of Reykjavík openly mourns the tragic events which unfolded in Orlando, Florida early Sunday morning.

The world is still reeling from a mass shooting that claimed at least 50 lives and injured scores of others at an Orlando gay club early Sunday morning, and Iceland’s capital is no exception.

As can be seen in this post on the city’s official Facebook page, Reykjavík City Hall is currently flying multiple rainbow flags – as well as one American flag and one bearing the city coat of arms – at half mast. Reykjavík Dagur B. Eggertsson conveyed his sympathies on Facebook as well, saying:

“Horrifying news from the United States. We have to stand together against prejudice and hatred. Always, everywhere. Reykjavík stands with Orlando.”

While Iceland is known for being very welcoming of its queer community, to the point where the annual Reykjavík Pride march is one of the most attended events of the year, Iceland is still no stranger to hate crimes against the queer community.
