A new poll shows the current presidential candidates in about the same position they were in for a previous poll.

According to the results of a poll conducted by the Social Sciences Department of the University of Iceland for Morgunblaðið – a newspaper that candidate Davíð Oddsson is the co-editor for – historian Guðni Th. Jóhannesson is the current favorite, with 67.1% of respondents saying they would vote for him if elections were held today.

At the same time, Davíð Oddsson came in with 17.4% and author Andri Snær Magnason received 7.8%. This latest poll was conducted over the past week.

These results are very similar to an earlier poll conducted by Market and Media Research in early May, wherein Guðni also had a strong lead ahead of Davíð, while Andri lagged behind.

The results of this newest poll are somewhat surprising, especially in light of reports that Morgunblaðið employees were being encouraged to sign a petition supporting Davíð’s candidacy.
