RÚV reports that a man in his 60s and a woman in her 50s were found dead in their apartment in Akranes midday yesterday. Investigations have revealed that the man shot the woman fatally the night before, and then turned the gun on himself.

Police are baffled as to a possible motive for the crime. The man in question has reportedly never had any dealings with the police before.

In fact, police only arrived at the apartment after the woman’s co-workers noticed she had not shown up for work that day and could not be reached.

Akranes Police Chief Superintendent Jón Ólason told reporters that on being called to the scene, they ran a routine check and discovered a firearm was registered to the household. This prompted the police to call in assistance from Special Forces, who joined the police as they raided the apartment, only to find the couple already dead.

Investigations are still at the beginning stages, and more details may shed light on what led to this tragic event.
