Throngs of tourists are deliberately ignoring clearly-marked police tape closing off a dangerous path to Gullfoss, amongst other things.

RÚV today posted a video showing groups of tourists ignoring police tape closing off a path to Gullfoss, and clambering down the icy path. The practice is potentially fatal and has already resulted in many broken bones.

As can be seen in the above video, some tourists have also taken small children into the area.

Whatever your opinion of the police, the path down to Gullfoss is closed for a reason. As the video attests, the path is so slippery that it is virtually impossible to walk on it without having to hold onto something to keep from sliding into the torrential waters far below.

For the sake of your own life, and those of people who may have to otherwise rescue you, please respect obviously closed off areas at sites of natural wonder, and observe the magic from afar.
