Some visitors to Iceland ensure there will be marijuana waiting for them upon touchdown.

MBL reports that some tourists to Iceland are using travel sites to find contacts in Iceland for procuring marijuana, and to have a quantity waiting for them at Keflavík International Airport when they arrive. These tourists are summarily debriefed on what Iceland’s marijuana laws are (SPOILERS: it’s illegal, without exception).

At the same time, Icelandair bears the distinction of being the only airline in Europe which travels to every state in the US that has legalised marijuana to some extent. This was not done deliberately, an official from Icelandair said, although the revelation was found amusing.

“There was someone here who realised this and joked about it,” Guðjón Arngrímsson, a spokesperson for Icelandair, told reporters, adding that the destinations involved – amongst others, Portland, Seattle, and Denver – are “populated by liberal, educated people.”

At least one other Icelander has taken notice of this, as a post in the Icelandic-aimed travel site Fararheill regarding a trip to Colorado offers visitors the chance to be able to smoke up while traveling between destinations in Denver. The post notes that Denver has seen a veritable tourist boom since Colorado legalised marijuana.
