The powerful storm that lashed over Reykjavík and wider Iceland last night and this morning has caused all kinds of damage, the extent of which is still becoming clear.

Social media proved to be the place to find out what was happening fastest in different areas of the city. Inga Birna Erlingsdottir posted a video of a dramatic flood, embedded below, that quickly went viral.

There were several other posts of this sort, including a blown down bus shelter, a car with a fallen fence post through the windshield, an uprooted tree against the front of someone’s house, and some roads in Mosfellsbær that were completely submerged.

The harbour also suffered, with fences and metal containers flying around in the winds, which reportedly got up to 50mps.

All of this possibly boosted the chances of this winter being named “asshole.”
