Hallgrímskirkja Will Not Tolerate “Love Locks”

Published January 31, 2015

Love padlocks will not be tolerated in the church tower of Hallgrímskirkja. On Saturday, Mbl.is reported that the first “love lock” had been installed on the fence securing visitors in the tower: a padlock, that is, with the names of two persons, presumably lovers, engraved in the metal. The names on the lock in question are Michaela and Will.

Later on Saturday, a Hallgrímskirkja staff member, reportedly unaware of the padlock until he read about it in Mbl.is, told the medium the lock will be removed as soon as possible, to ensure that others do not follow suit.

Last year, the so-called love bridge in Paris, Pont des Arts, suffered damages as par of its fence collapsed from the weight of all the love locks that had been hung on it. Since then, Paris city authorities have taken to remove a large amount of the locks hung on the city’s structures.
