Search For A Man Who Fell Overboard Continues

Published December 16, 2013

ICE-SAR units in East Iceland are searching for a man believed to have fallen overboard a foreign tramp steamer shortly before it sailed into the harbour of Reyðarfjörður.

The tramp steamer, Alexia, contacted the Coast Guard around half past six on Sunday evening, requesting help as the crew had just discovered that one of its members might have fallen overboard.

It is believed he fell off the ship between 15 and 18, he was last seen on board when the ship passed island Seley which is about 10 km east of Reyðarfjörður, RÚV reports.

Nearby fishing ships were notified and crew members asked to look around in the sea near Reyðarfjörður, but there was no sign of the man.

SAR units tried searching for him on Sunday night but weather conditions were quite bad.

Search was continued on Monday morning; the search area is vast but the units are both searching in the sea and on land, traversing the coastline.
