Two People Killed In A Plane Crash In Akureyri

Published August 5, 2013

Two people were killed and a third person is in hospital after a plane crash by Akureyri, North Iceland on Monday.

The airplane crashed by a race track where a number of people were watching and participating in a race. Debris from the airplane scattered over the race track but no one on the ground was injured, RÚV reports.

It is believed that the aircraft had shortly before aborted landing on Akureyri‘s airport and was circling over the town to prepare another landing attempt when it lost altitude by the slope of Hlíðarfjall and hit one wing on the ground while possibly attempting an emergency landing on the track.

The aircraft was a Beechcraft Kingair 200, used as air ambulance by flight operator Mýflug in North Iceland. The plane was returning from a call-out, carrying three people: captain, pilot and a paramedic.

Dozens of people witnessed the crash, both those on the race track and people in the neighbourhood, and have been offered counselling by the Red Cross in Akureyri. Police in Akureyri and Aircraft Accident Investiagation Committee now investigate the accident.
