From Iceland — Can Twitter Jump On The Eurovision Bandwagon?

Can Twitter Jump On The Eurovision Bandwagon?

Published May 16, 2013

Icelandic telecom company Vodofone hopes that tweeters will break the national record of 18,000 tweets on a single event during the Eurovision Song Contest.
It has opened a special Eurovision TV channel where viewers can simultaneously watch the competition and follow the discussion on twitter via the hashtag #12stig.
Although Icelanders are known for taking Eurovision seriously, they tweeted far under the record number, 7,400 times with the hashtag #12stig, last year.
The national record is held by Boladagur with the hastag #boladagur. It is a competition where Icelanders try to get international stars to retweet their entries, and had two thousand contestants compete this year.
If you have Vodafone cable TV, tune in on channel 800 or 801 for the full event.
NOTE: Icelanders have a rich tradition of translating foreign words into Icelandic to conform to the strict Icelandic rules of grammar. To ‘tweet’ in Icelandic is to ‘tísta.’
