Let Them Eat Waffles!

Published May 6, 2013

The Progressive Party leader Sigmundur Davíð Gunnlaugsson met yesterday with leader of the Independence Party Bjarni Benediktsson to feast on waffles with coffee and begin formal talks about forming a two-party coalition government, Vísir reports.
After delaying his decision for several days, Sigmundur Davið announced he would open formal talks with Bjarni on Saturday afternoon. Sigmundur was given the mandate to form a government by the President last Tuesday but insisted on meeting the leaders of all elected parties and cogitating on the matter before announcing his decision.
An ambiguous facebook posting by Pirate Party leader Birgitta Jónsdóttir had some speculating about the possibility of a three-party coalition without the Independence Party. However, Sigmundur did not fool the cynics and ended up making the expected choice.
In his official press release on Saturday, Sigmundur re-confirmed his promise to reduce property owners’ mortgage rates, and stated: “the solution is connected to the fact that creditors to whom banks owe money should expect a setback in debt payments.”
It was Sigmundur Davið’s assistant, Jóhannes Þ. Skúlason, who reported to Vísir that the two leaders stopped at the store to buy waffles on their way to hold a meeting in an undisclosed destination in the countryside. No confirmation has been made on whether strawberries and cream were included.
