Poor Guðmundur Franklín Jónsson just can’t catch a break.
Just yesterday it was reported that the Right Green Party Chairman and candidate in the Southwest constituency would be ineligible to run in the 27 April elections as he had failed to change his legal domicile to Iceland until… yesterday. Guðmundur had been living abroad for a number of years and hadn’t thought it important to register himself as legally residing in Iceland before running for political office.
His appeal of his disqualification from the elections was denied today and, to add insult to injury, it was revealed that, though he has been living in Iceland for the past three years he has not been paying any tax in Iceland, opting instead to report his income in the Czech Republic where he maintains his legal residence and a business, RÚV reports.
“No, I have not paid taxes here, but yeah, of course, I naturally pay VAT and those types of taxes, and the taxes on food here, but I have not been working here,” Guðmundur said. When asked by RÚV whether he felt that it was appropriate for somebody who doesn’t pay taxes in Iceland to run for Parliament Guðmundur replied “no, I just don’t feel anything is wrong with that.”
Sigurjón Haraldsson will replace Guðmundur to represent the Right Green Party in the Southwest.
