From Iceland — Parties Unite To Decriminalize Drugs in Certain Quantities

Parties Unite To Decriminalize Drugs in Certain Quantities

Published March 12, 2013

A group of 9 MP’s from The Movement, The Social Democratic Alliance, and the Left-Green Movement have tabled a motion to decriminalize possession of drugs in quantities deemed for personal consumption only.
This is part of a larger motion presented in parliament by the MP’s to devise a comprehensive strategy to reduce the demand for drugs in the country, RÚV reports.
The proposal calls for a team of experts from the state health services, the National Center of Addiction (SÁÁ), the police, psychiatric specialists, Social Services, and the Ministry of Welfare, to undertake an audit of the existing regulatory environment in Iceland. This is in response to the MP’s behind the proposal believing that little progress has been made to mitigate drug use in the country or to cut back on supply.
The proposal promotes prevention, and elimination of penalties for possession of quantities for personal use, and calls for the appointment of response teams to assess needs for services, manage risk and ensure the welfare of consumers, and ensure availability to treatment options for those seeking treatment.
