From Iceland — Snorrabraut To Be Narrowed

Snorrabraut To Be Narrowed

Published February 8, 2013

Snorrabraut is soon to be narrowed in a bid to increase pedestrian safety along the busy Reykjavík thoroughfare.
The Department of Environment and Traffic has agreed that the street, which is considered one of the most dangerous in the city due to its width and short pedestrian crossing times, will be narrowed at various intersections RÚV reports. Two fatal accidents involving pedestrians have occurred along Snorrabraut in the past eight years.
The proposed changes, which have been approved by city council, include narrowing the intersection at Bergþórugata to one lane in each direction, narrowing the intersection at Flókagata to one northbound and two southbound lanes, closing left-turn lanes at Flókagata and Eiriksgata, and adding a pedestrian crossing dedicated to the bus stop at Grettisgata.
The cost of the re-construction is estimated to be 10 million ISK.
