The city of Reykjavík signed a deal with the Ministry of Welfare yesterday to assist three Afghani families seeking asylum from Iran.
Vísir reports that three women, with four children and two young men between them, settled in Reykjavík at the end of last year. The children have been enrolled in school, and the women are taking Icelandic classes.
According to the details of the deal between the ministry and the city, Reykjavík is responsible for providing these asylum seekers with housing, financial assistance and counseling. The city will also give the families access to interpreters, and special assistance in learning Icelandic.
The ministry and the Red Cross will be assisting the city in their efforts. The deal will be valid until December 19, 2013.
