From Iceland — No Borders Continues In Iceland

No Borders Continues In Iceland

Published November 19, 2012

No Borders Iceland will be continuing, despite the disbanding of No Borders Reykjavík.
As reported, the immigrant and refugee rights group No Borders Reykjavík sent a statement to the press last week announcing that they would be disbanding due to “personal reasons”. They emphasised, however, that “No Borders is not bound to one place or one group, and can crop up anywhere, organising themselves as they see fit”.
In a new statement to the press, they clarify that No Borders Iceland will still be doing the work and continuing the mission of their organisation. In fact, they have been doing so for the past three months.
The group have long contended that Iceland’s immigration and asylum seekers policies are in need of serious reform. In a recent interview, No Borders member Jórunn Edda Helgadóttir put forward the idea that she believed the “Directorate of Immigration (UTL) [should be] shut down and a new institution established in its place. That one should not be built on the UTL’s old, fascist foundations and should be staffed with people working in the interests of immigrants and refugees. It should operate as a service institution, in favour of people’s rights, not against them.”
