From Iceland — Young Leftist Greens Want Vulva Museum

Young Leftist Greens Want Vulva Museum

Published October 8, 2012

An idea which went from being a serious proposal, only to be revealed as satire, has become a serious proposal again.
As reported, the Residents’ Movement – an association of Mosfellsbær townspeople – said that they are opposed to the town council majority idea of opening a wild animal museum to celebrate the town’s 25th anniversary. Rather, the association proposed instead a vulva museum.
The association argued in their original statement that equality issues have been featuring more prominently in everyday discussion. Such a museum would symbolically contribute to gender equality. Furthermore, the vulva itself has been made the subject of numerous works of art, from plays to sculptures. The group also added that it would be fun to have Russian punk rock band Pussy Riot perform at the grand opening.
It was later revealed that the proposal was a work of satire. “We found the wild animal museum idea ridiculous.” said Kristín Pálsdóttir, a secretary for the association. “So we came up with the idea to top the nonsense.”
Things appear to have come full circle, as Vísir now reports that the Young Leftist-Greens (UVG) have officially endorsed the idea. Making several puns regarding a town that needs “satisfaction” (the word for which in Icelandic is the same as the word for orgasm), a “dry cultural landscape” that such a museum could “wet”, UVG also believes a vulva museum could compete with the famous Phallological Museum in Reykjavík.
