From Iceland — Europris Shutting Its Doors In Iceland

Europris Shutting Its Doors In Iceland

Published October 3, 2012

Norwegian-based discount store chain Europris will be closing up shop in Iceland, resulting in all of its employees losing their jobs by the end of the month.
Yesterday, every employee of the chain received a letter informing them that come the end of the month, they would be without a job at Europris. This is due to the fact that the head office in Norway has decided to scale back operations by, among other ways, shutting down their Icelandic operations, Vísir reports.
Adding further insult to injury, these same employees will have to deal with a massive rush of customers as the store holds a 50% to 70% off sale this month, in an attempt to clear out merchandise and recoup whatever the company can.
Matthías Sigurðsson, the managing director of the chain in Iceland, told reporters that he had mixed feelings about the closure. The chain has been in Iceland for about ten years now, and he has enjoyed building it up, leaving him feeling bittersweet about walking away.
Managing director of the labour union VR, Stefán Einar Stefánsson, said that the firings have been a big shock to Europris employees, and that they will be given every assistance the union can provide in finding them new work.
