From Iceland — Extensive Bike Path Coming To Reykjavík

Extensive Bike Path Coming To Reykjavík

Published March 21, 2012

Reykjavík city council has approved a measure to design and build a combined bike and walking path stretching 4.5 kilometres through the city.
The history behind the plan actually goes back two years, RÚV reports. At that time, city council voted to increase the number of bike paths in the city five times over. There are biking paths within the city, but the majority of them are not downtown; rather, they can be found by the sea.
City council now has approved a measure which would construct a combined biking and walking path from Elliðaárós, over Sæbraut, to Suðurlandsbraut, Laugavegur and finally to Hlemmur. This will involve widening numerous sidewalks, as well as making some adjustments to the surrounding landscape – for example, the walking bridge over Miklabraut will be connected to this path.
The idea to build a tunnel under Reykjavegur was also raised, but is currently being put on hold and examined, due most to the cost involved.
The total cost for the plan will be 380 million ISK, including the 70 million ISK for the tunnel under Reykjavegur. The city is considering discussions with the national government on sharing the cost.
