Unnamed Party To Announce Name Soon

Published January 5, 2012

The party formed by Guðmundur Steingrímsson, which is already a sister party of the Best Party, has published some of the names submitted for the organisation.
Last August, Guðmundur – whose paternal family have been Progressives for generations – left the party due to disagreements regarding the European Union, what he felt was a troubling sense of nationalism within the party, and other reasons. He has since formed his own party, which has formed an alliance with the Best Party, and have said that their platform as striving for “a green economic system that creates plenty of jobs, a good education and health care system, productive and sustainable use of our resources, a continuous economy, fearless cooperation with other nations, perspective, democracy, liberalism, peace and compassion.”
However, the party was without a name, and so solicited responses from others for possible names. Yesterday, they published some contenders on their website.
Among the suggested names included are The Sister of the Best Party, the 99% Party, The Platformless Party, The Clique, The Party of the Working Class, the Happiness Alliance, The Best Progressive Alliance (Besta framsóknarfylkingin, actually a portmanteau of the Best Party, the Progressives, and the Social Democrats, for whom Guðmundur was also an MP), the Prettiest Party, Necessary Change, and the Reactionary Communist Twerp Party, a reference to a famous quote from Davíð Oddsson who, as Foreign Minister in 2004, called the Social Democrats “reactionary communist twerps” (afturhaldskommatittir).
Guðmundur said that a new name will be chosen within the next few days.
