From Iceland — Strong Support For Late Night Bus

Strong Support For Late Night Bus

Published December 2, 2011

One idea that has been dominating a city website that collects ideas from residents on how to improve the capital: that city buses keep running after midnight.
The website Betri Reykjavík encourages city residents to register and submit ideas for how to make the capital a better place to live in. Registered users can also vote “Support” or “Against” ideas posted by others. Once a month, city council takes up 14 ideas for serious discussion, possibly even inspiring legislation.
One idea that has been gathering tremendous support, Vísir reports, is that city buses be allowed to operate past midnight, every day of the week. The idea has attracted so much support, in fact, that it has been submitted to the Environmental and Transportation Committee as a formal proposal.
About 25,000 people have visited Betri Reykjavík, and it has around 2,600 registered users. City hall encourages all capital residents to register on the site; not only to post ideas, but to also provide arguments for or against ideas submitted by others.
