From Iceland — City With Ambitious New Website

City With Ambitious New Website

Published July 6, 2011

Three students, in collaboration with the city of Reykjavík, recently
launched a website whose purpose is collecting and charting personal
memories of different locations within the capital.
The site, Urb.is, has both Icelandic and English versions. As their mission statement explains, “Our objective with this web site is to bring out the soul of the city and make it accessible for the public, also to create a place for positive, uplifting and creative discussion about the city. On this web page you can share your experiences from Reykjavík with others and find out what they think about the city.”
The method itself is simple. Simply go to the Do Tell page. Think of any good experiences you have had in Reykjavík, and where they happened. Click on the location on the map where one such good experience occurred, then write a short blurb about what it was. You can also upload photos and embed video to boot.
Once this information has been processed by the webmasters, it will be added to The Map, where the experiences of others are already charted, and can be read and enjoyed by others.
Eventually, the city hopes that the map will be filled with the varied and personal memories of experiences that others have had in Reykjavík and, as the site is quite nearly fully translated into English, natives and visitors and new arrivals alike are all welcome to share their stories.
