Swedish Politician Starts Drunken Racist Attack in Icelandic Pub

Published November 8, 2010

A visiting member of the ‘Sweden Democrats’ Party has been compelled to
issue an apology to the staff of the Reykjavík pub Ölstofan, after he
yelled racist epithets and threw a glass at a server there.
During a Nordic minister’s meeting last week, William Hahne – a member of Sweden’s nationalist and anti-immigration ‘Sweden Democrat’ Party – went out on the town. While drinking at the pub Ölstofan, he apparently began acting rudely towards one of the servers there, who is partly of Palestinian descent. At the end of his stay, the server had had enough, he told DV. When Hahne handed over his card to pay his tab, the server said he tossed the card back at him, and refused to run it. It was at that point that Hahne began yelling racist epithets at the server, and threw a glass at him, hitting him in the shoulder. Hahne was quickly thrown out of the pub by security.
Kormákur Geirharðsson, one of the owners of Ölstofan, told DV that his establishment has “a zero tolerance policy” for racism, and that he takes the matter very seriously.
Swedish officials responded quickly to the incident, and invited the server to meet with Hahne to receive an official apology. However, the server declined the offer, saying, “I didn’t want to go because I knew it wasn’t going to be a real apology, as the man belongs to a racist party.”
