Last Lighthouse Keeper in Iceland Evicted

Published June 21, 2010

Lighthouse keeper, Sigurður Pálsson, was given notice to resign by the Icelandic Maritime Administration, according to vísir.is.
Lighthouses in Iceland are regulated by the Icelandic Maritime Administration (Siglingastofnun), which also maintains and operates the major coastal lights. Sigurður is the last lighthouse keeper in Iceland, and his departure will mark the end of a profession now completely taken over by new technology.
In an interview with local newspaper, Sunnlenska, Sigurður reminisced of how he brought milk to the men who built Knarrarósvita in 1939 when he was ten years old. Inherited from his father, Sigurður has kept the lighthouse, located east of Stokkseyri at Baugsstaðir, for decades. Sigurður’s main duty was receiving tourists at Knarrarósvita. Every year, up to a thousand people visit the lighthouse.
Once Sigurður leaves his lighthouse keeper position, no one will be allowed entrance to Knarrarósvita.
