Seriously Beautiful Sculpture

Have you been to the Einar Jónsson Sculpture Museum yet? Sure, this place doesn’t have any new exhibits like other galleries and museums, but these sculptures are so impressive and detailed and loaded with spiritual symbolism and allusions to Norse mythology that a permanent exhibit is enough to keep visitors entertained and impressed again and again. Einar Jónsson was the first and is still most notable sculptor to hail from Iceland and he sets a high standard. Einar and his works are such a national treasure that the state commissioned a building for the sole purpose of housing the sculptures and the artists and his wife in 1914. The massive plaster casts inside the museum are so intricate and emotionally enticing that one could spend significant time examining each and every one, declaring each a favourite before moving on to the next equally astounding creation. Ásmundur and Our Age

The sculptor Ásmundur Sveinsson was a 20th century man shaped by the 19th century. He took on various subjects in his art; at times looking to his heritage and the age that shaped him, and at others looking to the future, technology, and science. This exhibition showcases contemporary artists that tackle similar issues as Ásmundur did in his time, but in a context of a new age. All though presentation, thought and process might be somewhat different , the struggle is the same in a new century. In addition to Ásmundur's works, the exhibition displays works by artists such as Birgir Snæbjörn Birgisson, David Orn Halldorsson, Eirún Sigurðardottir, Finnur Arnar Arnarsson, Gudrun Vera Hjartardottir, Hrafnkell Sigurðsson, Olof Nordal, Petur Orn Friðriksson, Sara Riel og Steingrimur Eyfjorð.
