Gímaldin And Friends: ‘Þú ert ekki sá sem ég valdi’

Rock ‘n’ Roll has long had an infatuation with addiction, and many odes have been composed to various forms of recreational drugs, alcohol, cigarettes and even coffee. However, relatively few songs have been composed in honour of that scourge of modern man, obesity. An attempt to rectify this is the strangely compelling “Það sækir að mér hold” (“Flesh Keeps Finding Me”), while those who have too little also get a mention on “Bitinn af rollu,” (“Bitten by a sheep”) about a woman forced to steal food for her children, which starts with the lines: “The water on the stove is boiling, the potatoes are still in the store…”
Other selections draw inspiration from, amongst other things, Icelandic history, folk tales or MTV presenter Ulrika Ericsson. Multi-instrumentalist Gímaldin is as dextrous with his music as he is with his words, his main flaw being that he tends to overload his tracks so that it can be difficult to pick one line from another while going through styles from reggae to heavy rock. This, however, rewards repeat listens.
