There’s a running joke that the only thing people know about Icelandic music abroad is Björk or Sígur Rós. Iceland Airwaves began back in 1999 as an event to showcase the incredible profusion of musical talent that Iceland was and is producing, beyond (but, of course, including) Björk and Sígur Rós. The resulting program has always done a good job at providing comprehensive coverage of a rooted yet growing scene.

So while we are excited for the fresh faces and the up-and-comers, we also celebrate the rich background of genre-pushers and border-expanders. The big names. The Björks.

It has just been announced that Björk will be performing an exclusive concert during this year’s Airwaves. Her performance will be held in Eldborg at Harpa on Saturday November 5 at 17:00. Tickets to the concert are sold separately from the festival pass, but festival pass holders will be given earlier access to concert tickets. For those who have already purchased festival passes, a vendor code will be sent out on Thursday September 29, and tickets will be on sale until October 2 (or until they sell out).
