Production on the upcoming television series “Borgarstjórinn” (“The Mayor”) is nearly halfway completed. The ten-episode series follows comedian, former real-life Reykajvík mayor, and prior Grapevine cover model Jón Gnarr, as he returns to a role he knows quite well. However, this time round, cameras are rolling. Jón co-wrote the series with Hrefna Lind Heimisdóttir, Ólafur S.K. Þorvaldz and longtime collaborator Pétur Jóhann Sifússon. Pétur and Jón are well-known for their work together on “Næturvaktin” (“The Night Shift”), a television show focusing on employees of a Laugavegur gas station. Jón, who is set to direct five of the ten episodes, plays the Major of Reykjavík in this satirical take on politics in Iceland. “It’s a tragi-comedy, much like actual Icelandic politics,” Jón says.

The crew shot Friday in front of City Hall on Vonarstræti. The half-hour episodes are set to air in October of this year.
