The search for missing American hiker Nathan Foley-Mendelssohn was called off by ICESAR, Iceland’s search and rescue division, last night, Vísir reports. Over 150 people participated in one final search in the Landmannalaugar region for Foley-Mendelssohn yesterday, which also employed planes and search dogs. The thirty-four year old hiker has not been seen since the tenth of September.
Foley-Mendelssohn lives in Barcelona and was reported missing by relatives there when he did not return home on time. He had planned to hike the popular 55 kilometer Laugavegur hiking trail from Landmannalaugar to Skógar, but possibly abandoned this plan due to poor weather conditions. His rental car was found in the south of Iceland, where it is thought that he took a bus to the trailhead.
ICESAR’s Jónas Guðmundsson says that there are no grounds for further searches going forward, particularly given that the weather in the region is expected to be unfavorable over the coming days.
