From Iceland — Progressive Party Gaining More Ground At Independence Party Expense

Progressive Party Gaining More Ground At Independence Party Expense

Published April 3, 2013

The Progressive Party remains the largest party ahead of the 27 April elections, having siphoned nearly a quarter of those who had voted for the Independence Party away from the one-time front-runners.
As RÚV reports, the Progressives are currently looking at capturing 28% of the vote if the results of a new Gallup poll reign true. The Independence Party, on the other hand, would claim 22% of the vote, slightly less than they had received in the 2009 elections that followed the Independence Party being ousted in the wake of the collapse.
Unfortunately for the Independence Party, just 65% of those who voted for them last time have said they would do it again.
The Gallup poll interestingly outlined the educational backgrounds of those declaring their commitment to vote for various parties. Those who said they would vote for the Progressive Party largely had just a primary school (33%) or high school education (31%). The party most popular among university-educated voters is the Social Democratic Alliance (21%), though 20% of Independence Party supporters are also university educated.
