An attempt was made to burn the doors to Akureyri’s Lutheran church, but the arsonists were not entirely successful.

RÚV reports that police are searching for suspected arsonists who attempted to set fire to the church’s doors last night. Parish priest Svavar Alfreð Jónsson told reporters he believed this was an “organised attack on the church” at work.

“The door was set on fire,” he told reporers. “It was both sprayed with flammable material and had rags or paper shoved under the doors and ignited. The doors are very badly damaged after this. I don’t know if they’re ruined, but it wouldn’t surprise me.”

This is not the first act of vandalism made against this particular church, he said. “A few years ago, some slogan was scratched into the door. It was possible to repair for the most part.”

Police ask that anyone who might have any information on the attempted arson be in contact with them.
