Five Icelandic competitors will be taking part in the 2013 World Karate Youth Championships which start tomorrow in Guadalajara, Spain. RÚV reports that Icelanders will participate in both kumite and kata competitions, at the Junior (ages 16-17), and U21 (ages 18-21) levels. This will be the first time that Iceland has been represented at the World Karate Youth Championships, although Icelanders have competed at the adult level in the past.
The U21 group will start in the morning, with Jóhannes Gauta Óttarssonn (in the 78 kg group) and Kristján Helga Carrasco (68 kg group) competing in kumite, and Elías Snorrason and Aðalheiður Rósa Harðardóttir both participating in the kata competition. The Junior events begin on Friday, when Sindri Pétursson will take part in the the 76 kg group’s kumite competition. The team was accompanied to the championships by their coach, Gunnlaugur Sigurðsson.
