From Iceland — Bárujárn

Bárujárn

Published October 16, 2009

Who are you? What can we expect from your Airwaves appearance, and what can we expect of you in general?
We are Bárujárn, a four piece surf/psych/rock outfit with intentions to enrol as organ donors before it’s too late. Our Airwaves appearance will be probably be surreptitious in the clatter and commerce, nonetheless we will hopefully blow some minds and eardrums. In general, you can expect flag burnings, haddock fucking and hopefully a record soon from us.
What are some of the acts you’ll want to see at this festival, and why?
Well, Nolo seem to have big potential and seeing them develop will be interesting. But normally when you get so many acts to chose from at a festival, you can´t see half. So you can either get greedy, try to stealing a press pass and see everything, or you can stay at home masturbating as usual.
Are there any acts missing from the bill that you’d like to see on there?
ATRUM (brilliant death metal) and Singapore Sling. And of course Andrew W.K., not to mention Messer Chups
This year sees fewer ‘large’ international acts on the schedule. Do you believe this changes anything for the festival in general, and its spirit?
Not if people maintain the previous festivals’ levels of intoxication. Then you won´t remember a thing and can’t complain.
Looking back, do you have a favourite edition of Iceland Airwaves? And if so, why?
It was always 2006, because Thugz on Parole were playing.
A lot of our readers are first time Airwaves-visitors. Do you have any tips for them? What to see, what to do, what to avoid, etc? Where to buy records? Or a good place to grab a bite or get away from it all for a while?
Go and watch the masses skin bankers and politicians alive every Saturday at Austurvöllur, three o’ clock.
If there’s a huge line at the big venues and you are planning on staying there for an hour or two, at least try to carry as much alcohol on you as possible. Then you won´t have to buy beer from the venues at ridiculous prices. Instead, use your money to buy records directly from the local bands. Better yet, not going in if there’s a long line, instead exploring smaller venues and experience smaller local bands.
Then if you’re hungry, go late with a group of people and fill the superroberymarket 10-11. Try to steal as much as you can, and don´t feel sorry.
Given that most Airwaves-visitors won’t have a lot of time in their schedule to see the Icelandic countryside, are there any nature-havens close by that you’d recommend?
After you have gang and headbanged your neck away and you’re thinking about dying in the gutter, we recommend an exciting climb up the Hallgrímskirkja tower, taking a nap and a piss at the top.
Has a lot changed in the Icelandic music scene since Airwaves 2008? How about Airwaves 2004?
The metal scene has gotten more awesome and more ignored by festival holders.
