New Year’s has come and gone and we are now full-on into January, the month of slushy snow and black ice, but that’s no reason to be a Grinch at home, as this weekend is full of exciting events.
(FREE) FRIDAY
Ojba Rasta / Hide Your Kids
Reggae masters Ojba Rasta are putting on a free show with synth-driven pop band Hide Your Kids. You’ll find yourself swinging from side to side as if you’re from the Caribbean, and thinking back to the days when you were a little wanker.

Where and When: Gamli Gaukurinn at 21:00
Gálgahraun
Artist Kristján Jón has a new exhibit consisting of red and black chalk drawings of the protected and disputed Gálgahraun lava field. Those who have strong opinions about the field or are fascinated by minimalistic landscape art should make their way over.

Where and When: Mokka Kaffi from January 10 to February 13
 Darknote / Jötunmóð
If you hang out with all the metal kids, or are metal-curious, you may want to check out this event as it involves the epic Viking metal band Jötunmóð joined by wickedly brilliant Death Metal Band Darknote.

SATURDAY
The Days Of The Child Prodigy Are Over
Rakel Mcmahon and Bergþóra Snæbjörnsdóttir present a new exhibit focusing on the existence and consequences of being a child prodigy. It consists of drawings, poems and text, and is the culmination of a project started in 2011. There is a special performance on the opening night at 16:00.

Viennese favourites – The Iceland Symphony Orchestra
The Iceland Symphony Orchestra has a series of concerts that feature Viennese classics under the baton of Peter Guth, who is well known to Icelandic concertgoers. The soloists are soprano Hanna Dóra Sturludóttir, a regular performer in Germany’s leading opera houses, and tenor Gissur Páll Gissurarson, winner of the 2013 Icelandic Music Award.

Illgresi Bluegrass Night
If bluegrass interests you, then Illgresi are right up your alley. Featuring Guðmundur Atli Pétursson on the mandolin, guitarist Arnbjörn Sólimann Sigurðsson, banjo player Vignir þór Pálsson, and Eiríkur Hlöðversson on the double bass.

Kristbergur Ó. Pétursson Painting Exhibit
Kristbergur Ó. Pétursson’s new painting exhibit is inspired by and makes several references to the Hafnarfjörður lava fields, directly and indirectly. Kristbergur graduated from the Arts and Crafts School of Iceland in 1983 and completed further studies in the Netherlands in 1988. He has held multiple shows domestically and internationally. Kristbergur has thrice been granted the government funded artist’s grant.

Brikk Jazz Night
Newcomer venue Brikk has started a tradition of hosting jazz nights on Sundays, something we have heard is in high demand these days. Head on over and have a moment to yourself before the week starts again.

Alexander Rodchenko: Revolution In Photography
The exhibition is a retrospective collection of the photographs of Alexander Rodchenko, one of the leading Russian artists of the first half of the 20th century, and this is the last day to catch it. Alexander was convinced of the power of photography and strove to make people see it as an art form. Through his pictures, he wanted people to see the world with new eyes.Admission: 1,200 ISK and half price for students 25 and under.
