The Deep is based on the true story of the tragic voyage of an Icelandic fishing boat in 1984, and the incredible story of the sole survivor, Guðlaugur Friðþórsson. The film has been receiving critical acclaim, both at home and abroad, and was Iceland's submission for the 2013 Academy Awards.

Last year The Deep was submitted as Iceland's entry for Best Foreign Language film and tonight, the Academy Awards
nominees will be announced.
Baltasar told the Grapevine last September that while he's been thrilled to work in Hollywood with big name actors such as Denzel Washington, "I think that would have been very difficult [to shoot The Deep in Hollywood]. I don’t think we could even have gotten insurance for the production, the way we did it here, and what I had to do myself on the set, shooting scenes while swimming in the ocean a mile off shore to get the right angle for the shot, and taking shore in the cliffs in the surf like we did. You can’t really do that in a Hollywood production."UPDATE:

Tonight it will come to light whether or not Baltasar Kormákur's film The Deep will be nominated for Best Foreign Language Film.
