reports that the fund wants to give the town of Ísafjörður some 3,960,000 ISK for the purpose of helping immigrants better integrate into Icelandic society.
The money is to be divided up among 33 immigrants, who will be accessed about 120,000 ISK each. Ísafjörður had requested funding for 35 immigrants, but two of them were disqualified when it was discovered that they did not have legal residence in Ísafjörður.
The sole condition for receiving the funds is to be legally registered within the municipality, and to be seeking Icelandic language classes. It is the hope that with the funding, these immigrants will be able to have an easier time pursuing their Icelandic language studies.
A special government fund has earmarked nearly 4 million ISK to Ísafjörður to help immigrants living there integrate into Icelandic society.
