A statement from the Young Progressives proposes lowering the tax on condoms, in response to numerous health problems related to unprotected sex that have recently arisen.
The proposal calls for lowering the tax on condoms from its current rate of 25.5% to 7%. They point out that 24 Icelanders have been found to be HIV+ in the past year alone, and that both cervical cancer and HPV infections have also been on the rise.
Infectious disease authorities have also proposed the same, for the same reasons, in addition to making clean hypodermic needles free and more accessible to addicts.
Earlier this year, the Ministry of Welfare announced that it was looking for a way to reduce the price of condoms. As yet, the issue has not seen any concrete conclusion.
In the meantime, readers should know that free condoms are available at both Hitt húsið and Húð og kyn, provided you can get to these places while they are open. For late night condom purchases, Iceland’s residents will have to pay full price.
