From Iceland — Women in Minority of Management Positions

Women in Minority of Management Positions

Published June 30, 2009

Women comprise a rather small portion of management positions within the public spectrum, particularly in companies working directly under government ministries.
Social Democrat MP Þórunn Sveinbjarnardóttir posed the question to parliament’s ministers with regards to what percentage of the directorship positions at companies under their ministries were comprised of women. The highest percentage, at the Ministry of Fisheries and Agriculture, was 25%. Only 17% of directors of companies working for the Ministry of Industry are women.
The lowest percentages were at the Ministry of Finance, with 16%.
It should also be noted that most Icelandic ministers are men, and 27 of Iceland’s 63 MPs are women.
