From Iceland — Women in Corporate Directorships Decrease

Women in Corporate Directorships Decrease

Published May 20, 2010

According to the lastest figures from The Icelandic Association of Women Entrepreneurs, the number of women in positions of directorship in Icelandic companies has actually decreased, despite the state’s efforts to increase gender equality.
Of the 30,337 companies that were looked at, 23,291 had only men in their directorships. Last year, that figure was 21,490. The number of companies with only women in directorships has also increased, albeit from 4,275 to 4,668.
Overall, the percentage of companies with gender equality in their directorships has decreased from 16% to 14% over the past year.
The current Social Democrat/Leftist-Green coalition has prided itself on championing gender equality, not least of all within the government itself, where male and female ministers are now in equal number. Last March, parliament passed a law requiring gender equality for companies on the open market.
