From Iceland — Winter Tourism Campaign Underway

Winter Tourism Campaign Underway

Published September 9, 2009

The Ministry of Industry, in conjunction with the Office of Tourism,
the Trade Council of Iceland and the City of Reykjavík, is launching a
marketting campaign designed to boost tourism in Iceland, with a
special emphasis on winter visits.
The campaign, expected to be ongoing through October to March 2010, will focus on Britain, mainland Europe, North America and Scandinacia, Morgunblaðið reports. Approximately 150 million ISK will be spent on the effort, mostly in newspaper adverts and online offers.
While the average tourist could be forgiven for getting a chill at the idea of visiting a place called “Iceland” in the winter, winters in Iceland are actually quite mild; the capital area barely dips below the freezing mark in the heart of winter, and temperatures in the countryside aren’t that much lower. Among the myriad of must-try activities in Iceland during the winter, there are jeep and snowmobile tours of Iceland’s glaciers, mountain climbing, and skiiing. This is also the time of year to see the northern lights which, while especially vibrant in the countryside, are also quite visible within Reykjavík city limits.
