From Iceland — WOW Air Will No Longer Be Going To The US

WOW Air Will No Longer Be Going To The US

Plans to start flights to Boston this summer have been put on ice.

RÚV reports that WOW Air has canceled summer plans to fly to both Boston and Stockholm, as they cannot wait any longer for a final decision from The Competition Authority (ICA) on when they can operate the flights.

WOW Air’s director, Skuli Mogensen, told reporters that it was “painful” to make the decision, and not solely for passengers – there were plans in the works to hire an additional 70 employees to meet the growing demand.

The controversy centres around a decision made by the ICA to ISAVIA, the company which operates the Keflavík International Airport, that WOW Air be given specific times for their summer flights, in order to level the playing field with other airlines. ISAVIA, in turn, appealed the decision to ICA.

“I don’t feel comfortable signing a long-term airplane contract of many billions [of krónur] if I don’t know what I’m getting,” Skuli told reporters in part.
