From Iceland — Two Pubs Not Getting Their Licences Renewed

Two Pubs Not Getting Their Licences Renewed

Published March 11, 2011

After numerous complaints from residents in downtown Reykjavík, two pubs will not be having their operation licences renewed.
Vísir reports that the clubs Monaco and Monte Carlo – both on Laugarvegur in downtown Reykjavík – can expect that their licences to operate as pubs will not be renewed by city council.
The directorship of the Residents Association has expressed support for the wishes of people living near the pubs, which many have regarded as a haven for drugs and violence. The problem has apparently become so great that even those complaining about the clubs have been reluctant to do so under their own names.
Business owners have also complained that the clientele which Monaco and Monte Carlo attracts have driven away business. Whether and how either club will regain their licence to operate remains to be seen.
