From Iceland — The Walrus Has Left

The Walrus Has Left

Published August 21, 2013

A walrus who appeared near the delta of Jökulsárlón last Friday has left the area, but appears to be traveling the coastline.
The walrus, RÚV reports (with some frankly adorable photos), pulled itself up onto the black sand beaches near Jökulsárlón early Friday morning. The creature did not appear the least bit bothered by being photographed.
Nonetheless, employees of Jökulsárlón encouraged tourists to let the walrus have some peace and space.
As entertaining as the appearance of the rare marine mammal was, it was not to last. RÚV now reports the walrus has not been seen since last Saturday.
However, readers should not despair. Police believe that this was indeed the same walrus who appeared in Seyðisfjörður last July. With this trajectory, the walrus may be making its way west to Reykjavík. Or maybe not. We’re not walrus experts.
